A new FedEx Express facility opened last week at Copenhagen Airport (CPH), serving as a hub for inbound and outbound shipments for Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. This is the ninth new FedEx Express facility in Scandinavia in the past five years, located in the airport\u00b4s cargo area near the Oresund Bridge to Sweden.
\nThe 8,000-square-meter facility can sort 3,300 packages per hour, coordinate 18 FedEx Express flights and 170 truck movements every week, and manage a fleet of up to 36 delivery vehicles. Approximately 120 FedEx Express employees will work at the site.
\nThe \u201cNordic Gateway,\u201d as the facility is being called, will combines courier service, customs clearance, sortation and aircraft operations in a single location, said David Canavan, senior vice president, operations, for FedEx Express Europe.
\nFedEx shipping data has shown an upward trend in the region. Shipments between June 2014 and May 2015 from the Nordic markets to the rest of Europe increased by more than 24 percent, compared to the previous 12 months, FedEx said. North America, in particular, has also grown in economic significance for the Nordic region, with the overall number of FedEx Express shipments from Scandinavia to North America increasing by about 22 percent, year-over-year, between June 2014 and May 2015.
\nThomas Woldbye, CEO of Copenhagen Airports, said CPH is now \u201cthe largest cargo hub in Northern Europe,\u201d handling more than 370,000 tonnes of cargo in 2015. \u201cWith the new FedEx facility, we have made room for even more cargo in the coming years,\u201d he added.
