Brussels Airlines said it will begin direct flights between Brussels Airport and Mumbai International Airport by March 2017. The Belgian carrier plans to operate five-times-a-week flights between the two continents in response to \u201cdemand for direct flights for passengers as well as for cargo,\u201d said Lars Redeligx, Brussels Airlines\u2019 chief commercial officer.
\n\u201cWith more than 50,000 passengers per year,\u201d Redeligx added, \u201cMumbai is the third most important intercontinental destination from Belgium.\u201d
\nThe news comes after an especially bruising quarter for Brussels Airport, the Airline\u2019s hub. In addition to the terrorist attack at the facility in March, Jet Airways\u2019 decided to switch its European hub from Brussels to Amsterdam during the same month. The latter development eliminated the only existing direct link between Belgium and India.
\n\u201cWith India, we add an important market to our hub, after the departure of a major Indian player out of Brussels earlier this year,\u201d added Bernard Gustin, CEO of Brussels Airlines.
