Brussels Airlines said it will begin direct flights between Brussels Airport and Mumbai International Airport by March 2017. The Belgian carrier plans to operate five-times-a-week flights between the two continents in response to “demand for direct flights for passengers as well as for cargo,” said Lars Redeligx, Brussels Airlines’ chief commercial officer.
“With more than 50,000 passengers per year,” Redeligx added, “Mumbai is the third most important intercontinental destination from Belgium.”
The news comes after an especially bruising quarter for Brussels Airport, the Airline’s hub. In addition to the terrorist attack at the facility in March, Jet Airways’ decided to switch its European hub from Brussels to Amsterdam during the same month. The latter development eliminated the only existing direct link between Belgium and India.
“With India, we add an important market to our hub, after the departure of a major Indian player out of Brussels earlier this year,” added Bernard Gustin, CEO of Brussels Airlines.
